Custom Annular Space Heat Exchanger Designs for Industrial Systems

A key feature of annular space heat exchangers is their concentric flow arrangement. In this design, the process fluid flows through the annular space between two pipes, while the service fluid flows through the inner passage or surrounding section, depending on the configuration.

Krueger Engineering assists in the design of custom-made exchangers based on the available shell-and-tube technologies and heat transfer simulation by HTRI software and mechanical calculations with PV-Elite, Compress, and Nozzle Pro software tools. With in-house CNC machines and the ability to fabricate the equipment according to the ASME Section VIII code, we can deliver heat exchangers designed to operate in harsh industrial conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Annular space heat exchangers are preferable to tubular units if the goal of the heat exchange process is uniform heating and the fluids involved have characteristics that make it impossible to achieve with tubular units due to fouling concerns.
Annular space heat exchangers are most effective when using viscous fluids, slurries, and other fluids that are highly prone to fouling due to their nature.
Annular flow ensures uniform interaction between fluid and heating/cooling surfaces throughout the fluid passage.
High-viscosity fluids, solids suspended in liquids, sensitive materials, and low flow velocities increase the risk of fouling.
Design modifications could involve altering the annular gap sizes, flow rates, material choices, and heat exchange characteristics to ensure effective heat transfer without significant pressure drop and fouling.
Material choices depend on the nature of the process fluids involved and might consist of stainless steels, alloys, and corrosion-resistant metals.
Considerations during inspection and maintenance could involve designs that provide access to the interior parts, like the inner tube, for easier inspection and cleaning.
