A process condensing unit is a general term for any heat exchanger used in a chemical operation to condense, regardless of its position. An overhead condensing unit is a type of heat exchanger typically installed at the top of a distillation column to condense vapor.
The condenser removes heat from overhead vapor, causing it to condense into liquid. The condensed liquid is then collected, with part returned to the column as reflux and the remainder withdrawn as product, depending on the process design.
